With that, let’s talk about home care services in Calgary. Home care may be a great option for individuals who want to maintain independence, but require assistance in activities that are becoming more challenging as health changes. Not everybody is emotionally prepared for long term care, and this may be a great alternative.
In Alberta, we have access to public and private home care services. For those eligible, public home care is free and provided by Alberta Health Services. Private home care does come with a cost, but many will argue that the customer service quality and more-diverse types of assistance is worth the price tag. Read on for more information about these two types of home care in Calgary:
Public home care
Calgary Zone home care services (offered by Alberta Health Services) are free of charge for all eligible individuals. A case manager will be assigned to you or your loved one, and will work with you to create a plan that will address your unique care needs. If you or your loved one is living in Alberta, has a valid health care card, and can be safety cared for in a home setting, then you are most likely eligible for public home care.
Public home care offers assistance with medication and basic activities of daily living (BADLs). BADLs include personal hygiene (bathing and grooming), toilet hygiene, dressing, ambulation within the home, oral care, and feeding.

Private home care
In Calgary, we are lucky to have access to numerous private companies offering home care services. Generally, private home care providers have greater flexibility with regards to the assistance they provide. Where public home care assists with palliative care and BADLs, private service providers may also offer services to assist with instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), which can include housework, shopping for groceries, using technology or telephones, managing finances, and transportation within the community. Services will depend on the mandate of the company, so be sure in inquire of these are important to you!
